Notes: Originally posted 2023-02-26. Trauerspiel means tragedy. Given Maetel's story, as well as Leiji's Germanic influences I thought it would be a fitting title. Been into 999 for almost 5 years now, this my first 999 fic. I need to write some more Leijiverse in general again.

RIP Leiji Matsumoto. I hope your soul is resting easy in the vast sea of stars. Thank you for everything.

There was something about Maetel. She was radiant, mysterious, and kind. But there was a profound sadness in the air around her.

Behind her smile, you could see a never-ending sorrow locked deep within her heart. If you looked long enough into her eyes… One could espy that she’d seen countless unspeakable things in her time.

And behind that gentle exterior, was a woman whose anger could be so fierce— That she’d leave you wishing you’d never crossed her in the first place.

Maetel carried something atop her shoulders that was almost as vast as the sea of stars itself.
