Summary: Love.

She wanted to fall in love.

When Lachesis discovers she actually has feelings for Kyoka.

Also On: Ao3, Dreamwidth

Lachesis opened her eyes to see the academy’s infirmary. She was alive, and made it somehow. That purple cloth was still wrapped around her hand, and she didn’t know how much time had passed.

“Guys, she’s awake!” She heard the voice of Hotaro, before being surrounded by everyone as they ran towards her bed.

“It looks like the procedure worked…” Kyoka said, visibly shaking as tears welled up in her eyes. “I’m so glad you’re okay, Lache-chan.”

Lachesis didn’t realize it at that moment— but those words stirred up something deep within her that she wouldn’t be able to ignore.

Love.

She wanted to fall in love.

That was one of her dreams. There was so much else she wanted to do too, alongside that with this new freedom human life had given her. She was now on her own, free to do whatever her heart desired. No longer was she chained to Geryon and his whims.

At first she thought it would be Spanner she’d fall in love with. They both had history over the past year, but now she wasn’t sure.

And Lachesis noticed that she kept thinking about Kyoka on top of that.

What did it mean?

Emotions were so confusing.

Once she was sure about how she felt about the love she had developed over time, but now there was a feeling of uncertainty to it all.

As time passed Lachesis realized that her “love” for Spanner came from impulse. Rushing her way to grasp what she desired. But now that she had time to reflect on everything, she found love wasn’t that simple. What she once thought she wanted was not true to her in the end.

Lachesis came to realize she was happier to have Spanner as a friend and ally, and nothing more.

These days Lachesis couldn’t keep her eyes off Kyoka.

Whenever she was doing her mechanical work, her focused gaze enthralled Lachesis to no end. Kyoka was almost always popping up in her thoughts now too, and she would reflect on countless moments.

Like when Kyoka proposed the idea of seeing if she could become human, them doing experiments together, and the time she first tried takoyaki with her… She wanted to spend more time with Kyoka, and create more moments.

Was this what love actually was? Lachesis wasn’t sure just yet.

It was all so new to her after all.

Lachesis needed more answers. She wasn’t satisfied with just reading books or what the internet had to say on the topic. What she needed was an answer from another human.

Was what she felt about Kyoka love?

She thought the others were too young to answer this. She could go to Kyoka and dance around these feelings within being about her. But the thought of asking her about love made Lachesis’ heart leap in her chest.

(Perhaps that was another sign.)

She didn’t know who else to go to, so she pulled Minato aside one day after his class ended.

Lachesis had recounted the past few weeks to Minato. How she felt deep inside, all the thoughts that raced in her head, and how even the idea of talking about the concept of love with Kyoka felt impossible.

He smiled. “That sounds like love to me. I also have someone I love, so I understand how it feels.”

It was relieving to hear. But now… How does she go about this? More questions popped up as a new path began to show itself.

Though Lachesis was curious about what Minato said, “Who do you love?”

“I’ll tell you one day.”

She continued to ponder on what to do.

Lachesis had accepted her feelings for Kyoka were indeed love after all. In fact it made perfect sense when she looked back on everything, and how things were between them since they first met.

But now was the hard part: confessing.

According to Minato, confessions rarely came easy to anyone. Which also reassured her.

She had been flirty with many in the past. But that was just for her own amusement. But Lachesis decided to tap into her confidence she knew she had, and just tell Kyoka.

Hopefully she felt the same.

Lachesis waited for the right moment. When nobody else was around, and Kyoka wasn’t busy.

The anticipation clawed away at her. She wished she could use alchemy to move forward through time to that perfect opportunity and confess to her right now, but that was not an option. So she waited.

Hours felt like days, and days felt like years… Until the right time did show itself.

Today it was just the two of them in the apartment. After Kyoka’s work on a project that took up most of the week was finally completed.

It was time to do this.

Kyoka was relaxing on the couch and Lachesis sat next to her. Her heart was pounding, but she knew she could do this.

Lachesis spoke up, “Kyoka-san, can I talk to you about something?”

She grinned. “Sure thing Lache-chan. What’s up?” And that radiant smile of hers made Lachesis’ already racing heart want to leap out of her throat.

“It’s about love.”

“Oh! Did you and Spanner get together after all?” She patted Lachesis’ shoulder, “Congrats!”

She shook her head. “No.” Lachesis then looked Kyoka straight in the eyes, her gaze unwavering. “Actually… I discovered I have feelings for you.

She could see the multiple emotions that rushed through Kyoka’s eyes like a whirlwind. Lachesis’ heart only began to race faster through it all. If the anticipation didn’t kill her before, it certainly was now.

After a beat of silence, Kyoka’s features softened. “Well, that’s great to hear. Because I’ve felt the same about you for a while.”

In that moment it felt as if a massive weight was taken off Lachesis' shoulders. She was filled with joy, relief, and an overwhelming rush of love.

Kyoka pressed her forehead to Lachesis’ and whispered, “I’m so glad you’re back with us.”

They shared soft and gentle kisses while still on the couch. Basking in each other's affection, all the way up on cloud nine.

“That’s how you kiss someone.” Kyoka said.

A coy, playful smile came across Lachesis’ lips. “I think I need more practice. Care to help me?”

“With pleasure.”

Countless hours had passed, and the pair were passed out on the couch together. Sleeping with their arms wrapped around together with a blissful expression.

When Spanner got home, he had a small smile as he placed a blanket over the two of them. He left them to rest uninterrupted.

It had been a few weeks since the two got together. Lachesis felt so happy that Kyoka shared her feelings. It felt like a dream. And she was pleased that she understood herself more now, compared to when she first learned about love.

It was a confusing and winding path to figure out one’s feelings, love or otherwise. But Lachesis had learned that was all part of being human.

There was an exciting life ahead of her. One where she could be free and do as she pleased.

And enjoy that freedom to the fullest with the person she loved.
