The storm raged on outside the window in her father’s house. It rumbled through the walls and into her core. Rinne slowly turned through the pages of an old tome. The pages of which aged into a cream color, decorated with runes from a time long past. Penned by the alchemists of yore.

Rinne looked down at the second ring on her left hand. One forged from gold and darkness, but also by the power of a friendship that had been forged when it was too late for it to begin to flourish. A reminder of the friend she had lost that fateful day. But also a reminder of the powers she now had, and the friend that she made.

Who even when gone, was always still with her.

The ring shone under the dim light and crackling of a nearby fire beautifully. Sometimes Rinne swore she could feel a soft warmth emanating from the ring at times. Typically when Atropos communicated with her through her mind.

It didn’t happen all the time, but when it did the moment was something Rinne cherished.

She wanted to meet her again. Properly. With Atropos having a body of flesh and blood instead of clay and the memories of a younger version of herself. Created by a man motivated by evil, greed, jealousy, and malice.

Atropos was her own being. The Kings and Geryon would say she was nothing more than a doll. A vessel created for the whims of their creator and nothing more than that. That there could be no sense of self. No true hopes or dreams. Only the shadows of them that were a mere mimicry of the spectrum of emotion.

They would speak of how it was an impossible endeavor. To dream, to want. That homunculi could never be more than the materials they were made of. But as time would pass on Atropos and her sisters transmuted themselves through their own desires, becoming something, and someone, so much more.

The sisters proved such a change was indeed possible.

Rinne desperately wanted to see Atropos again, her friend. She was determined to make it happen. Since youth she showed prowess in alchemy. Her seriousness over her studies showed. Which made sense. It was her duty after all.

It was once, anyways.

Now it has become something much more than that. It was what she truly wanted to do now. More than a duty, or an obligation to continue the lineage of alchemy for the sake of her family It had become a driving force for Rinne. Her compass in navigating the vast world around her.

She believed they could reunite again one day. They wouldn’t be separated forever.

To reach the ranks of high alchemist became her new goal. Not only to make people happy, or to surpass her father— though both motivations still fueled her. Rinne also wanted to bring Atropos back. She believed in the power of high alchemy, and how it could help her see that dream through.

The two of them would reunite again one day. This she knew.
