On the television, there was an advertisement about a museum exhibition. It was going to show off multiple golden artifacts. As the shots in the commercial focused on these artifacts and showed off that metallic sheen under the museum lights, it made something stir deep inside Lachesis.

The color of gold alongside the metal itself invoked strong emotions within her. Even long before she defected from Geryon. There was a vast history behind it after all. Countless alchemists long before Geryon was even a twinkle in the eyes of the three kings who created him, longed to transmute it from lead or other materials for themselves. Gold had long been coveted by many across history. And the prospect of creating it captured the intrigue and boundless imagination of countless people, who would try to achieve that dream. Either through alchemy, or countless other means.

Whether she liked it or not gold was forever intertwined with the fabric of her world. A world of alchemy, centuries of thankless nights while tucked away in a chamber to try to create it through various techniques of transmutation, and dolls forged from blood and clay— such as herself.

Well, she used to be a doll. In the current day Lachesis was no longer what she was before. She had left her previous life behind, shedding that clay shell that once carried her around the world. And transformed herself into a human.

Thanks in no small part to Kyoka.

Lachesis still didn’t understand what made Kyoka so quickly on board with the idea of seeing if she could achieve humanity. It felt like such a spur of the moment idea back then, something that Kyoka spit-balled out into the conversation at large. It felt almost impulsive.

But she immediately showed so much genuine passion for the concept. And it was hard to not be at least somewhat intrigued by the idea herself, because of that very same enthusiasm. It felt like its own special form of alchemy.

To change her thoughts, alongside her nature as a homunculus. Opening her up to the possibility that she could be so much more. To grasp freedom and break free from the golden chains that Geryon had put her and her sisters in, and create a new life where she was at the helm.

Lachesis wished her sisters could enjoy this freedom too. Perhaps they might be able to one day. For now she could only hope.

She was extremely grateful for the opportunity that Kyoka had given her. At first she was hesitant to believe in this idea. And the more she learned about how humans lived, it sounded taxing. Plus all the errands she had to do for Kyoka on top of that…

There was an urge to reject it all. Deep, deep within. To continue to grasp onto her past life, one that was familiar. Even if it was something she grew to despise deep down, noticing the toxic nature of it all. But as time passed that urge gradually went away. Once she got that taste of freedom, she couldn’t have enough.

Nowadays she couldn’t imagine living the way she once did.

To follow each and every one of Geryon’s whims. Only to be a disposable tool in the end if she didn’t perform well enough. Or even if Geryon was simply bored of them. That wasn’t out of the realm of possibility either. As time passed began to see right through him and realized his true nature. How he truly viewed the three of them. Only as dolls, tools, to see his twisted desires through and bring them to reality.

But now she was with people who cared about her. People who saw her more than a doll. Even if they were all once her enemies.

Out of all of them, the one who stood out the most to her was indeed Kyoka.

She had spent the most time with her throughout this entire process. Spending countless hours at her desk scheming up new plans centered around Lachesis, spending late nights researching on homunculi, all to figure out how to make her achieve humanity.

Kyoka was one of the first people who really showed how much she cared about Lachesis and her well-being after she defected. And it still touched her deeply to this day whenever she thought about it. It would never fail to bring a smile to her face and warm her to her very core.

As she turned off the television, Lachesis looked across the apartment to see Kyoka reading something at her desk. A sight all too common.

With a smile she walked over to Kyoka and hugged her from behind, who was surprised. But quickly leaned into the touch with a grin of her own. She began to hold one of Lachesis’ hands, slowly stroking it with her thumb.

“What’s made you so affectionate today Lache-chan?” Kyoka looked up to her before she softly placed a kiss on her nose, “Not that I mind.”

Lachesis’ smile grew a little wider. “I just wanted to show my appreciation. That’s all.”
