Lachesis hadn’t seen anything like it before. She knew humans would gather together to eat, that wasn’t new. It was one of the beautiful things about food that she’d learned about. How it can be a way to help bring people together.

But everyone chooses a dish to bring along for a big feast? The concept never came to mind until now.

She didn’t know what the others were going to bring just yet, they all decided to keep it a surprise to add some extra excitement.

For now though, Lachesis would focus on cooking her dish with Kyoka. Spanner was making something too, but he’d wanted to do so on his own. And Kyoka thought it would be another good lesson about human life for her and Lachesis to make something together.

She opted to prepare udon for the potluck, since there was a recipe for it she hadn’t made in some time.

Lachesis watched over the broth as it simmered on the stove. Taking in the aroma as she looked down at its rich color. Kyoka was preparing the garnishes across the kitchen. Among which was a lot of coriander.

“Lache-chan, how’s the broth going?”

“It smells wonderful.”

Kyoka smiled as she prepared some tofu for frying. “That’s good to hear. Make sure to keep an eye on it, ok?”

Lachesis nodded, and after a moment of silence she spoke up again. “Kyoka-san… What is a potluck even like?”

“It’s awesome.” Lachesis could see the sparkles in her eyes as she began to talk. Something that always charmed her whenever Kyoka got excited. “You get to try all of the food everyone brings, each dish is usually something special to each person. In a way you get to learn more about others.”

Its really incredible how food was such a powerful thing in human life. Not only was it to nourish and feed, but to be able to form such strong emotions in people, and bring community… It was something special for sure.

At first when she joined Kyoka and the others, she didn’t need to eat. It wasn’t something that concerned her. She was a homunculus. A being created through the power of alchemy to not require such seemingly trivial things. But when she chose to become human, and as she changed and became more like one over time— she learned how for human life it was the opposite of such.

But she gradually became more excited to try new foods, many of which Kyoka shared with her. Kyoka was her guide for food in a sense, as well as much of living life as a human. There were some things she could only learn by herself. But if someone else could teach her something, it was more often than not Kyoka.

Though Lachesis wouldn’t have it any other way.

Lachesis also appreciated how food was what really began to bring them together. Her mind went back to when she had Kyoka’s takoyaki for the first time before declaring she wanted to become human. To this day she can still remember its savory taste. And how eager Kyoka was to share this part of life to her. The wide grin Kyoka had and her eyes filled with excitement was something she could picture with perfect clarity.

As Lachesis reminisced she felt her chest begin to flutter, as well as some slight warmth form on her cheeks. These sensations were still very new to her, but she also thought they were pleasant ones. Given how they always happened whenever she’d think about Kyoka. Who was someone that brought a lot of joy into her life.

Lachesis had a small smile as she continued to stir the broth, “I’m looking forward to it then.”

“I’m glad to hear!” Kyoka walked over to give her girlfriend a kiss. “Trust me, there’s gonna be awesome food there. Promise.”

The pair went back to preparing the food, and excitement for what was to come filled the air.
