Notes: Done for [community profile] toku100challenge. Prompt was complicated. Minato is such an interesting character! This prompt made me think of him, especially with recent developments. Originally posted on 2024-02-09.

Summary: Minato played the role of a double agent.

Also On: Ao3, Dreamwidth

Minato’s breathing was heavy and labored as he laid back against the cold metal. Spanner had missed his vitals, which was absolutely a deliberate choice on his part.

He must have realized what he had set out to do… Things were going according to plan. Spanner’s anger was so real and visceral when he lied about killing Kyoka that he thought he was truly straddling the line between life and death by invoking such rage. But it was something he accepted long ago as he set out on this path before him.

It pained Minato to lie to them all like this. To see the despair in their eyes, hearing the anger in their voices. But it was all for the greater good he’d remind himself. These children could not get involved further, it was too dangerous.

Just as painful, it hurt to lie to Spanner as well. His comrade, and someone he’d become so close with after graduation. Someone he’d come to know so well, and work with so closely.

To blatantly lie to all their faces was a pain that was leagues worse than the wounds he currently sustained from his battle with Spanner.

But he pressed on, and played his part well. One of a traitor whose true demeanor was one that was cold and calculating. Lying to his former students and alumni, playing the villain, all to take down the true mastermind right from the inside.

Minato played the role of a double agent. Straddling the line between good and evil just as much as the line between life and death. As such a part would entail.

But he was also still a teacher alongside a double agent, imparting knowledge and guidance in ways that were far from conventional. As much as he didn’t want the others to get involved, they were going to anyway. This he knew. So to teach them, even if it was from the other side… It was the best he could do.

Though with Spanner becoming a rider and unlocking his true potential, it looked like this approach was starting to finally pay off. After endless pain, progress towards peace was being made.

Minato would continue to do all he possibly could, to help the cause from the other side.

Lachesis had left him to tend for himself after briefly making a snide remark about his plans. Which he wasn’t surprised about. If he didn’t overhear Lachesis’ plea to her sisters to fight back against Geryon, he would be very concerned about her sniffing out his true intentions.

But this might work out in his favor. After all, he noticed it too. Long before she even brought it up to Clotho and Atropos: Geryon’s fickleness.

As he laid against the wall, he gripped at his chest. Breath after heavy breath— He’d find a way to incorporate this into his plans too.

Despite the nightmare that was to come ahead, he knew this was all for the greater good of the world.
