The first time Tarou came around to the oden stand, Sonoi was at a loss for words. He lost track of how long it had been since their last battle. Before vanishing without a trace.
Which began countless nights of restlessness. Wondering if they’d ever cross paths again, and what to do when the time came. If it even would. Haruka mentioned how he delivered her a package, but Sonoi never encountered him.
That was, until now.
Seeing his smile again… The first time Sonoi felt this, he wasn’t sure. But this time he knew for certain— That this feeling was joy.
Yet at the same time, Sonoi couldn’t deny there was something different he felt alongside that joy. Sharply contrasting the happiness he felt within. An aching sensation that crushed his whole being from the inside out.
Tarou forgot everything. And as far as Sonoi knew, there was no way to bring those memories back. Inside his mind buzzed with all he wanted to say. Yet he couldn’t bring himself to utter a single word.
With Tarou’s memories gone, where could one even start?
Recently Sonoi overheard something from a television display in town. Something that stuck with him ever since. To “make new memories”, a concept which was foreign to him. Just like so much about humans. Humanity continued to surprise him with what it could come up with.
And the man that made him appreciate what it had to offer, sat right across from him. Enjoying his oden. With the same smile that he’d come to love.
The cocktail of joy and grief continued stirring inside Sonoi’s heart. Tarou was still here. But even so, in a way he died again. And this death was even more painful than the last.
Before he could dwell on this further, Sonoi’s train of thought was suddenly interrupted.
“Delicious!”
Sonoi smiled gently, “Thank you.”
Nodding as he took another bite of an egg, “I’d give it… 55 points.”
Letting out a soft chuckle, there was a feeling of familiarity to this moment. Tarou’s bluntness, the delicious smell of oden, the points… It felt like coming home.
Tarou grinned. “Looks like we’ve made a bond.”
Sonoi instantly felt warmth rush across his face, and grow inside his chest.
Those old memories may never return. But new ones could still be made. And there was something comforting that came with knowing that.
End Notes: I finished Donbrothers 6 days ago and I have so many emotions. I'm very normal about these two. Had to do them for this prompt, I still need to get a grasp on writing them.
While it's kinda ambiguous at the moment just how much Tarou remembers thanks to Haruka's manga, I wrote this as if he remembers essentially nothing after the final battle to tug at the emotions a bit. :)
Here's hoping that v-cine might give Tarou a chance to reunite with everyone. I have trust issues because of OOO 10th but we'll just have to wait and see. Thank you for reading!
New note, 6-2-2023: This was very much written before the Donbros vs. Zenkaiger v-cine released, which it recently did... That's all I'll say. LOL
(Though I actually did like this special.)
