It had been several months since Lachesis’ death, but if all went according to plan— things were about to change.
Not too long after she was killed, Kyoka began the long and arduous process of finding out just how to bring her back. Alchemy was capable of countless things. Even if she had to go into older and more forbidden methods to achieve this, she was willing to try anything. Kyoka needed Lachesis to be back, she missed her.
Ever since that fateful day her heart yearned to see her again. More than anything she wanted to see Lachesis live the human life that she grew to desire to its fullest. And to see her bring that joy along to her sisters. Once they both could be together once again, Kyoka would know peace.
All of the needed ingredients were gathered. The lab was scattered with beakers, each of them containing its own colorful liquid. Every color was different from the last. Multiple alloys were present on her desk as well. They were placed next to a stack of old books she took from Fuga’s personal library, thanks to Rinne’s help.
She’d been at her desk and deep in her research for months. Spending countless sleepless nights to figure out just how she could bring Lachesis back to life. Clotho and Atropos would naturally be next. But Kyoka wanted to see if this method would work with the youngest sister out of the three first.
Especially since she was human before her death. That would make her the most complicated to resurrect, since Clotho and Atropos were still homunculi. Their bodies and what made them up were drastically different.
What she wanted to do wouldn’t be easy, but Kyoka refused to give up. She was going to become a better alchemist than Fuga too. It had been her dream since she was young. To go through with this and make it a reality would help her begin to finally walk down that path.
Bringing back any being to life was risky business, either they be human or homunculi. But if she could do this—
Spanner had walked in through the door with a tray of food in his hands. It was purple as always. “I see you’re still hard at work.”
“Well of course.” Kyoka placed the tray on her desk and gave him a nod to show her thanks. “I feel like I’m so close to figuring this out! I can’t give up now.”
“Just remember to take care of yourself Kyoka-san. I don’t want to see you collapse again.”
She chuckled. Ever since that happened after New Year’s he continued to bring it up whenever she was doing any sort of extensive work. Though he had a point. Kyoka knew Lachesis would have said the same to her too if she were here right now.
“Thank you, Spanner.”
The lab was ready. After having spent so much time preparing for this moment, the time had finally come. Kyoka was excited. Though also a bit nervous. Spending this much time on something she wasn’t sure would work until trying to execute it will do that to a person.
But she was going to bring Lachesis back. Hell or high water. If this time didn’t work, she’d try again. And again, and again, and again… Until they both breathed the same air once more.
Lachesis had a taste of finally being human before her life was taken away from her. Kyoka was determined to give her everything she ever wanted. She’d make sure Lachesis would finally get the chance to enjoy everything there was about living as a human.
A flask was in the center of the table. Surrounded by various alloys, one of which even being gold. As well as a piece of fabric from her outfit next to them. The liquid in the flask was a dark red. Reminiscent of the one filled with despair from the other timeline that she was told about from Rinne back last summer.
But this wasn’t despair. This was hope. Kyoka felt this, knew this, deep within her soul.
It was ironic that two materials that were present for this were reminiscent of Lachesis’ past. A past that was stained with darkness. And how they would be part of the very process that would bring her back into the light. Where she could finally live a life where she was free from the shackles of such a past. A life that would be free of Geryon and his control over her. As well as bring that same freedom to her sisters as well in due time.
Kyoka took a deep breath. Spanner was waiting outside. Looking through the window, focused on everything on the lab table. He was present not only because he wanted to see if this would work, but also to be of help if things somehow went south.
She had faith that things wouldn’t. All the research and tests she did were thorough, but it was always better to be safe than sorry. Kyoka took another breath. She could feel multiple months worth of determination surge inside her and course through every centimeter of her body.
It was time.
Raising her hand and reaching outwards, the red stone on her ring shone bright. To Spanner, it looked brighter than it ever had been before.
Kyoka began the chant, “As from the one all things are born.”
For a moment, there was nothing. Dead silence. Spanner looked over to Kyoka, and he began to worry. He knew she had spent countless days and nights working towards this.
Her heart was just about to sink. Until—
Everything on the table began to rumble and glow. Kyoka took a few steps back as her eyes were glued to what was happening in front of her. Her heart which was going to sink, now began to sing.
As everything merged together, the shape of a body began to form in the center of the light. Then the light burst bright. Enveloping the entire lab. It was so bright that Kyoka and Spanner had to shield their eyes for a moment.
And when they looked…
There she was. Lachesis was brought back to life, everything had worked.
Kyoka was in disbelief as tears began to well up in her eyes. She was silent for a moment before she spoke up, barely able to keep herself together. “…Lache-chan?”
Lachesis smiled. It was the same stunning smile that Kyoka had fallen in love with all those months ago. “I’m home.”
Kyoka rushed toward Lachesis and hugged her tight. So tight as to make sure Lachesis could never leave her side again. There was so much force as she ran forwards, she almost knocked both of them over the table.
Lachesis could only laugh as she hugged back, nuzzling into Kyoka’s neck and melting into her embrace. Tears began to form in her eyes as well. For the first time in her life, she truly felt she was finally home. And she knew that her sisters would enjoy this feeling too one day.
They looked at each other, tenderness in their eyes, and leaned in to give each other a gentle yet loving kiss.
Spanner smiled through the window. This was their moment. He went off to his room to let the two of them enjoy their reunion in peace.
