Summary: Rinne reflects on the past year.

Also On: Ao3, Dreamwidth

As Rinne prepared her belongings for another day exploring the new earth, to continue to learn if human life can be sustained there— she began to reflect and think about the past year. The new earth had become a symbol of the future to her. Not only towards a future where humans and chemies can coexist, but as well as everyone at the academy’s individual futures.

And looking forward to the future that was ahead of her, it made Rinne begin to look back at the past. Because so much had changed over the last year.

Before, Rinne had felt completely aimless and all alone. While she had her sense of duty as an alchemist to guide her through the waves of life, she still didn’t feel like anyone. Nor did she want to be anyone at the time.

Her sense of duty was once a dream before her father vanished. But when Fuga left, he took that dream along with him. Leaving only sadness, grief, and rage behind in its place. Those feelings always followed Rinne no matter where she went, or what she did. That weight was always on her shoulders, ever present and painful.

But things are so much different now.

Rinne had remembered how much she wanted to make people smile through the power of alchemy. Using it to bring happiness to the world. To her, this was what alchemy truly was made to do.

She also made her own rules now. Rinne used to honor the rules of Alchemy strictly by the book. As she was taught by her father, as well as her mentors throughout the years. It was her and every alchemist’s duty to uphold them after all. But now Rinne followed what she felt was right in her heart, and used that to guide her forward.

And she was no longer alone. No more did Rinne feel isolated from the world around her, because she had made wonderful friends who brought light and joy into her life.

Everyone at the Academy made her life so much better. They all had taught her important lessons, and she made wonderful memories with them along the way. Both of these things had shaped her into the person she is now.

Now Rinne wanted to be someone: A high alchemist who could bring smiles to the people. And to become an even better alchemist than her father could ever hope to be.

In the present day, Rinne was also much happier compared to before. That sadness, grief, and rage gradually turned into motivation to live life to the fullest and see her dreams through. As well as happiness that was now within her heart.

There were still hardships in life, though that was a given. But it was now hard for her to believe how she felt about life this time last year. Through the connections she had made, and the confidence she had gained as she grew— Rinne had transmuted herself into an entirely new person.

It was a beautiful thing.
