Becoming Human

Lachesis didn’t quite understand why Kyoka had sent her out to get groceries so often. What did this have to do with becoming human? Kyoka would say it’s all about learning to do tasks that others would do, getting a feel for the day-to-day human life.

But sometimes Lachesis thought she just wanted an easy way out of having to get them herself…

“Kyoka-san, I’m back—” As she opened the door she was greeted with a sight all too familiar to Lachesis at this point. Kyoka was completely passed out over the table. It looked like she was in the middle of her research again.

She looked so peaceful whenever she slept. Lachesis always took note of her slow breathing and calm expression whenever she saw her like this.

In a way, she was envious. To have a moment of peace like that was something that hadn’t been granted to her for some time… Even internally, she was always in a state of chaos. The current state of the relationship between her and her sisters always lingered in her mind.

Oh, how Lachesis envied Kyoka’s ability to have a moment of true rest.

Lachesis put away the groceries. She was determined to become human now, Kyoka knew this. But even if she did achieve this goal, would she ever truly know peace?

Despite that risk, Lachesis couldn’t help but feel a flutter in her chest whenever she’d think about how Kyoka was just as determined. Probably even more than her. Even though they were once on opposing sides…

Lachesis spotted Kyoka’s jacket slumped on the floor. Quietly she picked it up, and gently draped it across Kyoka’s shoulders as she continued to be deep in her slumber.

There was that flutter again. Was this her becoming more human?

Maybe so.
